Two Parties Emerge

This passage of the U.S. History Online Textbook is about the history of the  first U.S. election with political parties and why the parties developed.  The author says, when referring to the Federalists views of their opponents, "They viewed their opponents as dangerous radicals who would bring the anarchy of the French Revolution to America" (Ushistory.org) and this is how our party system works today.  Republicans see Democrats as radicals and Democrats see Republicans as radicals.  Both parties feel that if the other party disagrees with their opinion, it's not because it's a bad idea, it's because they don't want their constituents to think they have the opposite parties beliefs.  The two party system is broken because the two parties don't want to compromise.  If there were more moderates or independents in congress (or on the ballots) we would see a more well rounded America with compromise and promises that are kept.
